You hear Stabroek Market before you see it — minibus conductors calling routes, vendors singing prices, the four-faced cast-iron clock tower rising above it all. Opened in 1881 and covering more than 76,000 square feet on the bank of the Demerara River, Stabroek is the beating commercial heart of Georgetown and one of the great markets of the Caribbean and South America.
Under its vast iron roof — prefabricated in the United States and assembled on the riverbank — you can buy almost anything: mounds of mangoes, pineapples and bora beans, fresh gilbaka and butterfish from the morning boats, gold jewellery worked by local smiths, hammocks, spices, cassava bread and hot pepper sauce. The famous red clock tower is Georgetown's most recognisable landmark, visible from the river ferries and the seawall alike.
Come in the morning when the produce is freshest and the light is soft on the red ironwork. Haggle a little, try a snow cone or a plantain chip cone, and watch the speedboats load for the crossing to Vreed-en-Hoop. Stabroek is not a curated attraction — it is Guyana's daily life at full volume, and no visit to Georgetown is complete without it.
