More than 85% of Guyana is still covered in pristine rainforest — the untouched northern reach of the Amazon, where the canopy runs unbroken from the Pakaraima Mountains to the sea.
A forest without fences. Guyana's rainforest is part of the Guiana Shield, one of the oldest and most intact tropical forest systems on Earth — storing more carbon per acre than almost anywhere and sheltering jaguars, harpy eagles, giant otters and thousands of species still being discovered.
Iwokrama. At the country's heart lies the Iwokrama Forest — nearly one million acres given to the world as a living laboratory for rainforest science. Walk its canopy walkway 30 metres above the floor at dawn, when the mist lifts and the howler monkeys wake the forest.
Rivers as roads. The Essequibo, Demerara and Berbice thread the forest together. Travel as Guyanese always have — by boat — past river islands, waterfalls and villages that appear out of the green like secrets.
Experience it. Stay at rainforest lodges like Iwokrama River Lodge and Atta (beside the canopy walkway), trek with Makushi guides, spotlight caimans by night and listen for the red howler chorus at dusk. This is the Amazon as it was — and as Guyana intends to keep it.
